Nutrition & Lifestyle: Food as Your Medicine
After years of working with women, I’ve realized that most of us have lost touch with how to nourish ourselves properly. We’ve been taught to count calories, avoid fat, and follow the latest dietary trend, but we’ve forgotten how to listen to our bodies and eat in a way that actually supports our health.
In Ayurveda, food isn’t just fuel – it’s medicine. But not the same medicine for everyone. What heals one woman might aggravate another, which is why personalized nutrition is so important.
Why Cookie-Cutter Diets Don’t Work
Your body is unique. Your digestive fire (Agni) is different from your sister’s, your friend’s, or that influencer you follow on Instagram. Some women thrive on raw foods, others need everything cooked. Some need more protein, others do better with more carbohydrates. The key is understanding what works for YOUR body.
Eating for Your Body Type
If you’re more of a Vata type (tend to be anxious, creative, easily overwhelmed):
- Your body needs warmth, moisture, and grounding
- Think cooked grains, healthy fats like ghee and nuts, root vegetables, and warming spices
- Avoid cold, dry, or overly stimulating foods
- Raw salads and iced drinks are probably not your friends
If you’re more Pitta (tend to be focused, intense, sometimes irritable):
- Your body needs cooling and soothing foods
- Think coconut, melons, leafy greens, and mild spices
- Avoid overly spicy, fried, or sour foods
- That extra hot sauce might be making your skin break out
If you’re more Kapha (tend to be steady, sometimes sluggish, gain weight easily):
- Your body needs light, warming, and stimulating foods
- Think lighter grains like barley, beans, spices, and bitter greens
- Avoid heavy, oily, or overly sweet foods
- That daily latte might be contributing to your sluggish feeling
Simple Principles That Work for Everyone
Eat when you’re actually hungry – Not when you’re bored, stressed, or because it’s “time to eat.”
Create a peaceful eating environment – Put away your phone, sit down, and actually taste your food.
Drink warm water – Cold drinks can dampen your digestive fire.
Make lunch your biggest meal – Your digestion is strongest in the middle of the day.
Don’t mix incompatible foods – Fruit with milk, for example, can create digestive issues.
Include all six tastes – Sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent throughout your day.
Eat dinner early – Give your body time to digest before sleep.
